Indigenous Girls’ Leadership and Cultural Preservation Initiative in Karamoja.
The Indigenous Girls’ Leadership and Cultural Preservation Initiative is a community-led project designed to empower Karimojong girls and young women through mentorship, cultural education, leadership development, digital storytelling, and protection from harmful practices such as child marriage and school dropout. The project seeks to preserve and celebrate Indigenous Karimojong identity while creating safe spaces where girls can build confidence, strengthen their voices, develop practical skills, and become future community leaders rooted in their culture and traditions. The initiative recognizes that many Indigenous girls in Karamoja face multiple challenges including poverty, gender inequality, limited educational opportunities, early marriage, cultural erosion, climate insecurity, and lack of platforms to express themselves. At the same time, Indigenous knowledge, traditional songs, oral histories, beadwork, dances, and storytelling traditions are increasingly at risk of disappearing as older generations pass away and younger generations lose opportunities to learn their heritage. This project therefore combines cultural preservation with girls’ empowerment, leadership, education, and intergenerational learning.
